A washer can spread the load that a nut, bolt or screw head will apply to a surface and serve to keep
the assembly from loosening. There are many types of imperial washers which are designed to add various
qualities to the fixing point of the assembly.
Our range of imperial washers are available in a
variety of materials appropriate for their intended purpose. Usually the same material is used for nut,
bolt and washer. This will ensure that, particularly in damp, wet or salty environments, galvanic corrosion
is minimised.
The internal diameter of the washer will always be slightly larger than the nominal
diameter of the bolt. Within some ranges of imperial washers the clearance between bolt and washer will
be significant. The nominal diameter is generally shown in fractions of an inch for 1/4 inch or larger
washers. Nominal diameter bolts and nuts, and occasionally washers, smaller than 1/4 inch, are expressed
in gauge size.
The data sheets for each washer type will also give you the external diameter and
the thickness of the washer in decimal inches.
