10.9 Black Oxide Coated Steel High Tensile Bolts

High tensile bolts are produced from steel with a lower than usual carbon content that has been alloyed with other materials, such as chromium or molybdenum, to improve the material's strength properties.

High tensile bolts with metric threads are generally available in three different grades or 'classes' starting at 8.8, through to 10.9 and then 12.9 and sometimes beyond. These numbers refer to the bolt's minimum tensile strength and then the yield strength. High tensile bolts and nuts will be marked with this strength grade.

Other thread standards employ their own high tensile strength grading rationale.

BZP-G5	Bright Zinc Plated (BZP) USA Grade 5 High Tensile Steel - Equivalent to ISO class 8, a general purpose high tensile grade with a basic level of corrosion resistance.
ZnFlk-10.9	Organic Zinc Flake Coated Class 10 High Tensile Steel - A higher tensile non-stainless grade for screws and bolts. Coated with superior mechanically applied zinc with corrosion resistance lasting 480 hours in the salt spray test.
ZnFlk-12.9	Organic Zinc Flake Coated Class 12 High Tensile Steel - A higher tensile non-stainless grade for screws and bolts. Coated with superior mechanically applied zinc with corrosion resistance lasting 480 hours in the salt spray test.

Holo-Krome branded socket cap low screws, in alloy steel with a tensile strength of 10.9, and finished with black oxide. Manufactured in the USA, Holo-Krome are high quality screws, similar to Unbrako, with precision 3A threads for greater clamping force. The fillet between the head and the body is closely controlled for maximum fatigue strength. Similar to DIN 7984, socket cap low head screws are designed to be used in applications where the head height needs to be limited. The reduced head height and therefore more shallow socket depth, means that the preload cannot be as high as for standard socket head cap screw (see data sheet).
